John Buchovecky represents clients in energy and infrastructure project development, investment, operation and regulation in the United States and internationally. He has extensive experience structuring projects, business ventures, negotiating project agreements and documentation, and representing clients in related commercial, investment, regulatory and permitting matters. John’s clients include developers, investors, owners and operators, energy commodity companies and marketers, fuel suppliers, and equipment and technology vendors.
John is active in conventional, leading, and emerging technology sectors from fossil fuels power generation to demand side, smart grid, and distributed energy generation. Some of his current representations include development and operation of natural gas-fueled power generation, cogeneration, geothermal power, photovoltaic and concentrating solar power, waste-to-energy and other biomass power generation, renewable biogas, smart grid applications, energy efficiency, energy security, and related projects. He also represents clients on electric power transmission infrastructure matters including development and permitting of merchant transmission and independent transmission projects using high voltage direct current (HVDC) and other technologies.
John also represents clients before federal and state agencies, and local authorities in matters involving investment, ownership, operation and acquisitions and dispositions.
John is experienced in federal financial assistance programs, and has worked with clients to obtain substantial federal funding for the advancement of both energy and environmental control technologies, and has advised on leading projects advancing carbon capture, including carbon capture incorporating geologic storage (CCS). Many of these projects involve forming and managing the public-private partnership process, as well as dealing with the Department of Defense and various federal agencies.
John’s practice includes both U.S. and international markets and he has worked on matters in Latin America and in East Africa. He has advised on emerging market entry strategies, analyzed offshore regulatory regimes, and developed proposals for policies, laws, and regulations to encourage foreign investment in energy infrastructure.
In addition to his practice, John is General Counsel to the firm, is on the board of VNF Solutions, and serves as one of the firm's Ethics Officers.
