With offices in Washington, DC and Seattle, WA, Van Ness Feldman helps clients design and comply with the nation's energy and environmental laws.  The firm was founded in 1977 and now has more than 80 attorneys and public policy professionals.  In both of its offices, the firm offers a congenial, supportive, and professional environment unique to small and mid-sized firms.

Advising Industry Leaders on Cutting-Edge Issues

The firm provides a range of legislative, administrative, litigation, and transactional services.  A few examples of our work include:

  • Representing a broad spectrum of electric industry stakeholders before the Congress and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
  • Handling mergers, tariff filings, and licensing and permit proceedings before FERC for natural gas pipelines and hydropower generators.    
  • Representing a variety of clients in rulemakings and enforcement proceedings relating to environmental management, hazardous waste, and product stewardship before the Environmental Protection Agency and state environmental regulators.
  • Providing strategic business, legal, and policy advice on climate change, energy efficiency, clean technology, emissions trading, and carbon sequestration. 
  • Representing developers and manufacturers of advanced energy and environmental technologies before the Congress and Departments of Energy, Commerce and Transportation.
  • Developing operational and compliance strategies to ensure clients in the electricity, natural gas, oil pipeline, and manufacturing sectors meet complex regulatory requirements. 
  • Assisting private and public entities and Indian tribes in structuring all aspects of natural resource development and energy generation projects (e.g. contract negotiations, financing, ownership, and operation). 

A Legacy of Public Service

Van Ness Feldman places a high priority on the value of public service.  A number of our members have held high-level appointments in the Department of Energy, FERC, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of the Interior.  Others have served as counsel or chief counsel to committees of Congress and as senior advisors to members of Congress.  The firm also has an active pro bono program that encourages professionals to provide continuing service to the community.  Our pro bono efforts include adoptions of children in the DC foster care system, political asylum cases, and animal welfare matters.
