Athena Kennedy’s practice focuses on environmental issues, particularly those related to permitting and siting of renewable energy facilities and of nuclear materials facilities. Ms. Kennedy assists clients in reviewing the sufficiency of renewable energy facilities located in the Pacific Northwest, including wind farms and new small hydroelectric facilities prior to purchase. Ms. Kennedy also advises clients regarding the permitting, financing and development of new nuclear facilities for all stages of the fuel cycle.
In addition, Ms. Kennedy has experience with all stages of environmental and contract litigation, including cases involving indemnification, breach of contract, government bid protest, constitutional and property issues. She also assists clients in navigating state and federal hazardous waste laws and regulations for a variety of types of facilities. Ms. Kennedy also works with the firm’s Indian Law, Pro Bono, and Electrical Transmission practice groups.
Professional Background
Before joining Van Ness Feldman, Ms. Kennedy served as a legal intern at the U.S. Department of Justice's Environmental Enforcement Section and as a summer extern for the Honorable Judge Edward F. Shea, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington.
Prior to law school, Ms. Kennedy was employed by a Hanford contractor, where she had an opportunity to work with health physicists and contribute to several technical documents analyzing the effects of radiation exposure for the Department of Energy. Ms. Kennedy is a native of Richland, Washington.
