Nadia Zakir’s practice focuses on energy and environmental matters. Her practice area includes administrative litigation, global climate change, and transactional representation. She has assisted with representing electric utilities, natural gas pipelines, and oil pipelines before various federal and state regulatory agencies, as well as before federal courts. Her transactional work includes assisting clients with international greenhouse gas offset transactions, and with the preparation of project agreements. She has also assisted clients to obtain federal and state regulatory approvals, including market-based rate authorizations, and other regulatory compliance issues. Ms. Zakir’s pro bono activities include the representation of an asylum seeker before the Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals.
Ms. Zakir received her J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law in May 2004, where she was a staff member of the Journal of Gender, Social Policy and the Law. She was an American University Mediation Services certified mediator. Ms. Zakir received her M.A. from the University of Chicago, Department of Social Science (Middle East Studies) in May 1997. She graduated from the University of San Diego in January 1995 with a B.A. in International Relations.
Professional Background
Prior to joining Van Ness Feldman, Ms. Zakir worked as an intern for the Office of the General Counsel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). In this position, she researched and drafted memoranda relating to FERC’s regulatory methodology, drafted congressional letters and responses to agency rules and notices of proposed rulemaking (NOPR), and analyzed and summarized comments in response to NOPRs.
